Roberta Earlene Lindsey, known to her friends and family (and perhaps a few bemused onlookers) as Berta, departed this life on March 10, 2025, in good old Southaven, Mississippi. Born on April 20, 1945, in Memphis, Tennessee, Berta was a fiery comet who graced us with her presence for a glorious 79 years.
Berta was a bookkeeper by trade, crunching numbers for various businesses before finally hanging up her calculator at Wesley Neurology in 2017. She retired at 72, a milestone of both age and years spent arguing with spreadsheets. If you were ever fortunate enough to witness her at work, you would have noted a rather unique attribute—she was known to roll her eyes with sarcastic flair that had colleagues chuckling from across the cubicles.
If there was one thing Berta loved more than numbers (which wasn’t much), it was her family. She thrived on familial chaos, except when it came to her great-grandson, Ryker—who, let’s face it, could do no wrong in her eyes. The two shared countless moments, ensuring that each family gathering was an event to remember, often fueled by her unyielding stubbornness, which might just put a mule to shame.
For all her sass and schemes, Berta was blessed with a heart as big as her personality. Whether it was raising her niece Karen Kroush or doting on her daughters Alicia Nunn (Johnny) and Stacie Olivi (David), they all found in her a fierce protector and a goofball sidekick during life's adventures. She was also the proud Nana of Britney Churchill, Blake Churchill, Chandler Olivi, Dylan Olivi, and Connor Olivi. Each one knew well to ask Nana for the secret stash of cookies just before they showed up for a visit.
While Berta had no shortage of quirky hobbies—she famously preferred animals to people and had quite the talent for painting—one thing we're certain of is that she painted her family life in vivid colors, always ensuring that there was never a dull moment when she was around.
Berta is now reunited in spirit with her husbands, Bill Browning and Jim Lindsey, her sister Jeanetta Walls, brother David Wilson, and her beloved parents, Everett and Ethel (Michaels) Wilson. These angels must be shaking their heads as they welcome her with open arms, probably muttering about how life just got infinitely more interesting.
Her legacy of love, humor, and undying devotion to her family will continue to resonate with all who had the good fortune to know her. So, raise a toast (or a can of Sprite Zero, Berta’s drink of choice) in her honor, and remember: wherever Berta is, you can bet she’s working her magic, making everyone around her laugh—and likely still arguing with the universe about the right way to do things. Cheers to you, Berta!
