Max Wayne Kelso, a beloved figure known for his dedication to his family and his life's work, passed away peacefully on September 24 2024, at the age of 89 in Amory, Mississippi. Born on September 2, 1935, in Osceola, Arkansas, Max led a life filled with purpose, hard work, and cherished memories.
Max devoted most of his life to farming, that shaped not only his work ethic but also his unwavering love for growing things. He delighted in the beauty of nature and often expressed this joy by nurturing a stunning garden, a testament to his ability to coax life from the soil. Later in life, he broadened his horizons by working as a seed salesman for Wax Seed Company and eventually ventured into the landscaping business. Regardless of the job, Max's meticulous approach and dry sense of humor left an indelible mark on everyone around him.
A proud father and grandfather, Max's greatest joys included spending quality time with his family. He loved going deer and quail hunting with his sons, creating lasting memories that now echo fondly in their hearts. In his later years, the profound love he shared with his wife, Joyce, who predeceased him, was evidenced by tender exchanges; Nona, one of his daughters, fondly recalls how he would reciprocate her heartfelt “I love you” with a warm smile and the same affirmation. His knack for nurturing extended to his grandchildren; Teresa frequently remembers him holding and feeding the little ones, a simple yet profound gesture that illustrated his immense love and care.
Max was not only a hard worker but also a remarkable teacher. He believed in doing things the right way and was eager to show others how to do so, imparting life lessons through each shared experience. His knowledge and passion were reflected in his interactions with his family and friends, as he gently guided them by example.
He is survived by his son Mark Kelso (Denise); daughters Nona Springer (Herbert Sr.) and Teresa Boylan (Lee); 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Harris; his brother, Allen Kelso (Sandra); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever cherish the legacy of his kindness and strength.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Melbia and Louise (Neal) Kelso; his beloved wife, Joyce (Alsup) Kelso; brother Joe Kelso; sons Wayne and Glynn Kelso; grandson Chris Kelso; great-grandson Gunnar Rosenthal, along with great-granddaughters Joyce Maxine Langlois and Monica Murray.
