Mary Evelyn Spencer, a dedicated educator who touched the lives of many through her teaching career, passed away on April 23, 2024, in Paducah. She was born on December 18, 1932, in Senatobia, MS to her loving parents William Alfonso and Claudia Elizabeth Nabors.
Mary's passion for education led her to earn a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Ole Miss. She went on to teach first grade at Southaven Elementary School for over 15 years, where she nurtured young minds with care and kindness.
Beyond her career, Mary found immense joy in spending time with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was at the center of her life, and she cherished every moment shared with them. Her proudest accomplishments were not only in her professional life but also in the roles of a mother and grandmother that brought her immense pride and fulfillment.
A fine Christian lady, Mary was actively involved at Colonial Hills Baptist Church, where her faith shone brightly through her actions and words. Her kind and compassionate nature endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by siblings Frances Nabors, Virginia "June" Ann Nabors, Billy Nabors, and her husband of 57 years, Roger Dean Spencer. She is survived by her son Stephen Spencer (Malinda); granddaughter Susan Hogan (Jeremy); grandson David Spencer (Adrianne); great-grandchildren Nolan Spencer, Evelyn Hogan, Callan Spencer; sister Nancy Burchfield; as well as other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Aside from shaping young minds in the classroom, Mary enjoyed hobbies such as gardening and walking. Her green thumb brought beauty to the world around her, reflecting the nurturing spirit that defined her life.
Services to honor and celebrate Mary Evelyn Spencer's life will be held at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Southaven. A visitation will take place on May 3 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. The burial will be held at 12:00 PM.
Mary will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, love for family, faith in God, and the kindness she extended to all those around her. Her legacy of compassion and wisdom will continue to inspire generations to come.
May she rest in peace knowing that she has left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
