Joseph Eugene Smith, 80, of Southaven, MS, passed away on January 15, 2018. He was born October 5, 1937 in Coila, MS to John Joseph and Gladys Violet Smith
.
He served as a seaman on the USS LAWS Destroyer stationed in the South Pacific. He was a Cryogenic Technician for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. until his retirement. He was a member of a Masonic Lodge, after years of Masonic service, the Scottish Rite Mason Joseph Smith served as a Shriner. He was also a Southaven VIP, who mainly focused his volunteer efforts in voting precincts during public elections.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Dortha Mattson Smith; son, Barry Smith and his wife Rachel; daughters, Cherry Pickering and her husband Rodney, Cynthia Barnum and her husband Marc; brothers, George Robert Smith, Curtis William Smith, and Billy Joe Smith Sr.; sisters, Jerry Janice Green, Alma Lavern Griffin, and Betty D. Nelson; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Marion Thomas “Popcorn” Smith and Jon Breland Smith.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations and memorials in honor of Joseph Eugene Smith, be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (713 S Mendenhall Road: Memphis, TN 38117).
Services are set for Friday, January 19, 2018. Visitation starts at 12:00 P.M. and the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. Twin Oaks Funeral Home Chapel,
