James Michael Smith touched the lives of many during his time on this Earth Known affectionately as "Mickey," "Frog," "Poppy," and "Mike," he was a social individual and a true team player in every aspect of his life. Born on September 15, 1950, in Owensboro, KY, James led a life filled with remarkable achievements and cherished memories. He served his country with honor during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army as Military Police. After his military service, James retired as a mining superintendent for Lehman Roberts/Memphis Stone and Gravel, where he poured his heart and soul into every project with unwavering dedication.
Michael was not only passionate about his work but also about sports. From being a staunch advocate for anything involving a ball to playing baseball in the minor leagues, he excelled in all things sports-related. His love for competition extended to the golf course, where he showcased his skills with finesse and unwavering dedication. However, Michael also found joy in the simpler things in life - whether it was traveling, going on long drives, savoring delicious foods, or simply relaxing on the back porch.
Among his proudest accomplishments was pitching a perfect game (no-hitter) as a child, displaying early on his talent and determination. Throughout his career, Michael undertook various projects that he executed flawlessly, taking immense pride in his work each step of the way.
On June 30, 2024, after battling a lengthy illness with grace and resilience, James Michael Smith peacefully passed away at home in Hernando, MS. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Dianne (White) Smith, who stood by his side through thick and thin. His memory will be forever cherished by his brothers Kevin Smith and Larry Smith.
In this time of grieving, let us remember Michael for the remarkable individual he was - a loving husband, a bonus father and grandfather to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a dedicated brother, a respected colleague, and a dear friend to many. As we gather to bid him farewell at the Graveside Service at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Southaven on July 10, 2024, may we find solace in celebrating the life of a man who touched our hearts in countless ways.
Rest in peace, James Michael Smith - your legacy of kindness and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know you.
