Gussie Evans Cook, age 87, of Hernando, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Senatobia Health Care and Rehabilitation in Senatobia, MS. She was born on March 10, 1936 to the late Thomas Pinkney and Maude E. (Pierce) Evans.
Gussie graduated Valedictorian from Rocky Creek High School in George County, MS with the class of 1954. While in high school, she played basketball and was voted “Miss Rocky Creek” as a senior. She was an active member of Carriage Hills Baptist Church in Southaven, where she served faithfully in the nursery. She was an officer of the Southaven High School Band Booster Club. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service Center in Memphis, TN as a Returns Specialist.
In addition to her parents, Gussie is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Edward Cook, whom she married on September 5, 1954 in Lucedale, MS; sister Jamie Dickerson of Lucedale, MS, and sister Nell Kennedy of Moss Point, MS.
Gussie will be lovingly remembered by her four daughters, Beth White (Scott) of Mobile, AL, Robin Burgin (Chris) of Mansfield, TX, Katie Laughlin (Jim) of Humboldt, TN, and Kim Jones (Timmy) of Hernando, MS, 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Twin Oaks Funeral Home from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens.
