Deborah “Debby” Black Franklin passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on April 29, 2024. Debby courageously fought cancer for 18 months and the positive attitude for which she is known never wavered. She was born on May 20, 1955, in Clarksdale, Mississippi to her loving parents William Patterson Black and Shirley Ann Lowe Black.
Debby was a proud graduate of The University of Mississippi - earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Criminal Justice. She cheered for the Rebels in every sport, all year long.
In her professional life, Debby dedicated 30 years of service to FedEx before retiring in 2013. Debby made friends easily and through her work at FedEx established several profound, lifelong friendships.
Beyond her academic and professional accomplishments, Debby will most importantly be remembered as the very best Mom and Nana.
Debby is survived by her daughter Hollis “Hollie” Johnson (Andrew), as well as three sisters: Linda Ford (Reagan), Rebecca Black, Laurie Ann Ward (Jim). She was immeasurably proud of her four grandchildren: Alexander, Audrey, Nathaniel, and Nicholas Johnson.
Debby was the glue of her family and friends, and she will be deeply missed by many. She was often referred to as an “angel”; a fitting nickname for Debby as she was a beacon of positivity and kindness. Her actions and presence brought comfort and joy to those around her.
