Charles Ray McCracken, lovingly known as "Chuck," passed away on March 21, 2025, in Southaven, Mississippi, at the age of 80. Born on January 21, 1945, in Water Valley, Mississippi, Chuck was a figure of resilience and dedication, having been self-employed as a carpenter since the tender age of 17. His craftsmanship was not just a profession but a testament to his hard-working nature and an essential part of the life he built for his family.
Chuck was known for his honest, straightforward demeanor, often described as one tough bird. His unwavering principles and brutal honesty stood out as hallmarks of his personality. Outside of work, he filled his days with hobbies that brought him joy, including gardening, fishing, and indulging in a good tomato sandwich. He found peace in riding his motorcycle and had a passion for old cars that symbolized his longstanding appreciation for craftsmanship, both in his work and his personal pursuits.
Family was the cornerstone of Chuck’s existence. He deeply cherished time spent with his sons, Charles McCracken and Shane McCracken, their wives Cassy and Christy, and grandchildren—Chaz, Cam, Cash, Chandler, Canon, and Caleb—alongside his granddaughter, Molly, and seven great-grandchildren. These relationships were among his proudest accomplishments, embodying the love and legacy he nurtured. Holidays were especially meaningful to him, creating bonds and weaving memories that will forever be treasured by those he loved.
In addition to being a devoted family man, Chuck embraced his community through service, once volunteering as a police officer in Horn Lake and DeSoto County. He was also proud to have been a member of the Shriners and Masons, engaging with others to give back and make a difference.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Jenkins) McCracken, and their daughter, Renee Ashworth. He is survived by his four siblings—Ruth Alexander, Eddie McCracken (Sethanie), Carolyn Helvering (Jim), and Steve McCracken (Lynn)—who, along with Chuck's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, will carry forward his spirit and legacy.
A graveside service to honor Chuck's remarkable life will be held on March 28, 2025, at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Southaven, Mississippi, starting at 11:00 AM. Chuck McCracken leaves behind a rich tapestry of cherished memories and the profound impact he made on all who knew him.
