Bettye M. Craig

October 29, 1931 — May 5, 2022

10/29/1931 to 05/05/2022

She always signed her name “Betty M Craig “ and for many years we thought the M was for Merrell because in one of her lifetimes she was Betty Merrell, our father’s wife. She was his widow at the age of 32.  From the beginning, orphaned at a tender age, her life was marked by deep tragedy. She suffered the loss of her husband, her parents, her sisters, and her son. She had material and financial losses. She knew hunger. She knew physical pain. She knew heartbreak. But what I remember was the way she persevered- her triumphs. Family, especially her children, was the most important thing to her. Her expression of that was her laser focus on providing for us, keeping us together, protecting us. She would humbly say that God had always taken care of her and THAT He did. It was remarkable the way she overcame adversity. She not only accepted change, she adapted and became better because of it.  We have no doubt that she is with God in perfect peace and love now.

Bettye was a real estate broker for three decades, and she will be missed by the entire real estate community of North Mississippi, and she was the co-owner of the Olympic Fitness Center and will be missed by the entire Olympic Fitness Center Community

She is preceded in death by her husband Bill Merrell, her husband Jim Craig, her parents, her 4 beautiful sisters, and her beloved son, Joe Merrell.

She is survived by her brother Preston Maddox and wife Jean, her daughter Sherrie Merrell, son Carey Merrell, and daughter Suzanne Chambliss as well as grandchildren- Alexis Masso-Cobbins, Colin Masso, Michael Barnett, Taylor Chambliss, Careyanne Chambliss, Haley Thomas, Betsy Merrell, Molly Merrell, Rosie Merrell, and Will Merrell and a great-granddaughter, Scarlett Thomas, and a great-grandson “Jet” Thomas.
