Joseph A. Cates, Sr., 85, of Southaven, MS passed away on October 15, 2018 at North Delta Hospice in Southaven. He was born in Nankipoo, TN on January 2, 1933 to the late Joseph Leroy Cates and Nettie Gamble Cates.
Mr. Cates was very active in his community. He served as Mayor of Southaven from 1985-1997. He also served as Justice of the Peace and Supervisor of District II in DeSoto County as well as a reserved deputy for the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department. Mr. Cates took the upmost pride in serving his community. He was a past president of the Mississippi Municipal League and participated in the Rotary Club, the Lion’s Club, and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served our country in the United States Navy.
Mr. Cates is survived by his son, Joseph A. Cates, Jr. of West Memphis, AR; three daughters, Vickie Bullock (Al) of Southaven, MS, Sherry Akin (Bobby) of Horn Lake, MS, and Pam Cooper (Case) of Marion, AR; eight grandchildren, Mendy Lyle, David Staten, Penny Raines, Joey Cates, Kyle Bullock, Case Cooper, Kevin Cates, and Whitney Cates; six great grandchildren, Gage Smith, Carson Hubner, Cannon Hubner, Bailey Raines, Riley Raines, and Case Cooper; one stepson, Jackie Jackson (Angie) of Southaven, MS; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Shaw (Bob) of Southaven, MS and Susan McKinney of Panama City, FL; seven step-grandchildren, Ross Shaw, Kayla Shaw, Justin Jackson, Jessica Jackson, Chrissy Hollywood, Ashley Thompson, and Emily Reed.
He was preceded in death by his wife of twenty-two years, Charlotte Cates, his parents, two brothers, Wendell Latelle Cates and Bernard Marlette Cates, and one step-grandchild, Kaitlyn Shaw.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 in the chapel of Twin Oaks Funeral Home from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 10:00 am at Desoto Hills Baptist Church (4680 Getwell Road, Southaven, MS 38671). Interment will take place at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Southaven.
